Why I want to meet Rita Verdonk

As an emigrĂ© to the Netherlands, news reports about her—and my own experiences with the immigration service here—make me want to sit this woman down & find out what really makes her tick. I’m sure she isn’t as bad as the press paints her, and as an emigrĂ© perhaps I have no right to question this country’s (her) stance on immigration. But come on, we aren’t ALL bad! I happen to think this country is lucky to have me, yet I was treated with as much respect as a slug by her office. She’s no longer minister of the IND, she’s moved on to youth services or some such thing. But I want to see if her nickname, “Iron Rita” is really deserved. Call it morbid curiosity.

Why I want to meet Barack Obama

I’ve only seen him a few times on talk shows (I’m an ex-pat & it’s difficult keeping up with politics sometimes) but he comes across as intelligent, extremely well-spoken, centered, and someone I think I’d be proud to have as my president (unlike current leadership). I confess to not knowing the REAL story of his politics, but he speaks a good game and let’s face it, they often all end up the same. But I want an intelligent man for president next time. I’m sick and tired of having to apologize for current leadership while at the same time maintaining the pride I DO have over being American. I think this may be my choice in 2008. But I want him to convince me!

Why I admire Ellen Degeneres

There is no other personality that makes me feel so glad to be alive! I find her intelligent, dedicated and supremely funny in a way I can relate to. The best part of her humor (and I choose to believe it’s a part of her personality, as well, though I don’t know her) is that she’s never resorted to unkindness, to vulgarity, or to base humor to get a laugh. She seems such a pure talent, the kind of down-to-earth person you just wanna hang with and laugh with and bask in the warmth of her. I especially love that her humor often is tinged with some mildly self-deprecating humor, not too much, just enough to let us know she doesn’t feel high and mighty but is just one of us…though talent wise, she’s so far above everyone else I know. What a gushing entry THIS turned out to be! My husband’s gonna start worrying about me, I think! :D

Why I want to meet Vincent Van Gogh

Well, of course meeting HIM is no longer possible … in this world, anyway. I was lucky enough to see his exhibition in Los Angeles about 10 years ago and now I live relatively close to his home. Still, I’ve never visited his museum and that I WILL DO in 2007! As close to meeting him as I can get, so it’ll have to do. I’m most struck by the work we rarely see or hear about—his Oriental phase. His mainstream work I don’t find as interesting, possibly because it’s become too familiar.
